“Lokated” on the sleeves of Duxton along Neil Road, The Lokal serves up Aussie-style brunch items in a laid back environment carefully decked out in 50 shades of blue — a nice visual distinction from the majority of third-wave cafes in Singapore.
Apart from cushioned seats that line the perimeter of the cafe, a communal table sits out front at the entrance — a homely corner that looks absolutely deserving of a feature in a home & living magazine.
Walk further in and grab a place at the back if you’re in for a live culinary show from their open-concept kitchen. The three counter seats get you an unobstructed view, together with lovely chat with the Chef. (PS. His daunting glare washes away with a friendly hello.)
Available from 9am till 3.30pm on Saturdays and Sundays, the weekend brunch menu comprises healthier options like granola, quinoa and smashed avocado on sourdough. Clearly, we went to the dark side and had a meat-off with our picks from the selection of wholesome burgers and sandwiches.
I had the Breakfast burger with Pork Belly ($23), which came with layers of broken omelette, chilli jam and to my utmost delight, cooked spinach. It’s not often you see cooked greens in a burger. And as it should, the flavours from each individual layer came together quite nicely in a big toothsome bite. The crisp walls of the pork belly added great texture to the mix, while the chilli jam gave it a tangy kick.
As I recall, I was most enthusiastically recommended to try the Toasted Banana Bread ($12) on my return visit when I first came for coffee. “It’s amaaaaazing. We bake our own banana bread and it comes with our homemade vanilla yogurt and caramalized bananas.” So we did. Of course we did.
Four stuffed faces later, the toasted banana bread got a unanimous vote for the best item ordered. Unless you’re not big on the idea of soaked bread and candied bananas , we’re pretty sure you’ll love this too.
The Lokal brews their coffee proudly from a $40,000 custom V3 Slayer machine with coffee beans sourced from sister cafe, Sarnies.
